Sheeple

As “pig farmers”, we have noticed the drop in pork prices – to the point that we are not taking pigs to butcher, because the prices are too low. People are afraid to buy pigs at auctions, etc.

This happened because of Sheeple. Sheeple think that they can get Swine Flu by eating pork. Look at some quotes from the NYTimes:

While it may be too soon to know how the swine flu outbreak will affect pork sales, early indications are mixed. Pork sales at Wal-Mart are down by high single digits, a spokeswoman said. However, pork sales have remained constant at Publix, a grocery chain based in Florida.

At a grocery store in downtown Houston, Gina Tran, a homemaker, said she usually bought pork but had stopped because of safety concerns.

“People in Mexico ate some pork and got sick, right?” said Ms. Tran, who was looking for selections in the beef case. (That is not what happened, as far as anyone knows.)

Yvonne Enard, a retired warehouse worker, said she too believed there was a connection between pork and swine flu but figured it would be safe to eat anyway. “I’ll buy it, but I wouldn’t buy it from just any store, and I would season it and cook it very well,” she said.

So, our family no longer calls it the Swine Flu – it is the H1N1 Flu. For once the media has it right – they have put the word out there  to call it by it’s medical name.

When Pigs Flu?

I have no brilliant words of my own about this Swine Flu “outbreak”, I would say I am 60% confused, 20% concerned, and 20% paranoid. So.. I am reading everything I can, and passing the mic for now.

Obama says “It’s not a cause for alarm”.

Eh? I guess he has to say that. It’s not like people mass panic or anything right?

Arbor Day

Ok.. so all day that song has been going through my head. You know… the commercial  from when we were kids, with the bird telling you “trees are terrific!”?

There – now you can have it in your head for the remainder of the day.

Anywho – plant a tree – and get outdoors and enjoy spring. :)

In honor of Earth day – I am looking into how to use our goats milk to make soap and lotions.  I hear there are ways to use the ash we create from the wood burner too. We are also going to cut back on how much bottled water we buy.

Be Green!

However, we will not be cutting back on how much meat we eat. According to the news this morning if everyone cut back 20% on the meat they consumed, it would be like everyone driving hybrid cars.

Yeah, I don’t think I buy that – eat meat – make your brain healthy.
There are tons of other ways to be green.

Rainy

Well, it’s rainy today – so garden work is on hold I suppose.

I would much rather have rain than snow any day though.

I snapped a pic of the goat kids yesterday, thought I would share. Makes me think of a nice sunny spring day instead – even though there seems to be leaves on the ground from last fall still! :)

The Garden…

Well the Gurney’s order is in, and the ground has been chopped up – next is the fertilizer. Will post pics tomorrow of the progress!

If you haven’t ordered from Gurney’s before, check it out – they are running a $20 off $40 deal at the moment. www.gurneys.com You can Google gurneys discount codes to find the latest deals.

With prices the way they are, we are going to do a price comparison of what we were able to grow and not spend at the store or farmers market this summer.

Watch for updates to the main site as well :)
